EMI REDD 17

Well its not very often these come up - I think there are only 5 or 6 left in the world! So its no wonder this recent ebay auction ended early - probably some megastar bought it for their living room. The current bid was £14k with loads of bidders when it got pulled... and more info on this out there?

Neve 54 Series

This was recently being sold by Primal Gear (I think, it came from the Sphere Electronics mailing list I am on, who I think were bought out by Primal...?) Anyway its a lovely little 16 into 4 into 2 mixer that was going for $14k (£8k). These are late 70s broadcast desks really, so the mic pre-amps are not as good as the 80 series (what are?) but it would be a great little mixdown desk for most projects

Trident B Range

I know its been a while, but this console is very worthy of a mention...

Neve 5300 Series

These Neves do come up occasionally, about once a year it seems! The 5300 is underrated compared to the other vintage Neves, and yet some people say the 33114 / 33115 preamp/eq are the best they ever made

BBC / Glensound In Bits

Look at this amazing console that is up on ebay today. This kind of makes me angry, how can something like this end up in bits, unloved and unused!

Quad Eight Pacifica

When I was in LA recently I recorded a singer at a really cool studio. It was Brian Kehew's new place in Burbank...

Neve 8128

This ended on ebay with no takers...

Yamaha PM1000

OK, I want this, but alas it is in America and too expensive and complicated to organise

Small Soundtracs

I'm not a huge fan of soundtracs consoles, having owned two large ones over the years. The first was a CM4400 32 channel split console, then a 32 ch Virtua digital desk. Both were OK desks, but in the end their uninteresting and 'boxy' sound wore me down and I moved on. However, this cute little desk could be pretty useful at a meagre £650...

Yamaha M1532

Check this little console out - is it really as nice as the PM series?

Neve 8038 from Castle Oak

Castle Oak studio is selling its 1972 Neve 80 series. Its on ebay, with some very poor pics, and jpeg text. Anyway, its a fantastic console... for £128k

Abbey Road EMI TG-12345

Once in a lifetime opportunity! Somehow this legendary EMI solid-state console has become available to buy. It is arguably the best desk to feature on this blog. I wonder how much it goes for and to whom...

Friday 20 May 2011

Neve 5315

This beautiful console is over on Sonic Circus

Studer 189

These don't come up very often, its a fully discreet 60s / early 70s era Studer - the 'Swiss Neve'

Tom Petty and an MCI 416?

I snapped this from the telly, a doc about TP&the heartbreakers. That looks very much like an MCI 416 b, possibly Muscle Shoals?

Theres a cool API on Primal Gear at the moment. No price though

This is my 100th post for Balance, so I thought I would do something a bit different. Here is a review of the various consoles used by the totally great Radiophonic Workshop over the years

Saturday 16 October 2010

SSL E Series

For some reason I haven't posted much about SSL desks. Maybe they don't come up for sale so often or something, or maybe they don't catch my eye so much, which is pretty odd considering how into early 80s stuff I am. Anyway here is a great looking console from 1982

Neve PMS 12-2

How about this little baby? This has to be one of the sweetest 12 channel mixers ever made

Cadac E-Type

There's a rather interesting looking late 80's Cadac on ebay
